More about the property

This beautiful 5,179 sq-ft log home commands 'the' panoramic view of the valley below.   To the northwest is John Wayne's former ranch, 26 Bar (now owned by the Hopi, as it is considered sacred land to the tribe); to the north are the Springerville lava fields with their ancient savannah-covered volcanoes; and to the east rises Flat Top Mountain.

Location

Located on 1.45 acres of mature pinyon pine and juniper, this home is set on a hillside with 2 million acres of forestland and the White Mountains 250 yards to the south.   Immediate landscape bordering the home offers buyer `blank canvas' for personal design choice.   The climate, temperate and comfortable year round, attracts migrating hummingbirds and other bird species.    At an elevation of 7,000 feet, Eagar is located in the northeastern portion of Arizona.   It is approximately 4 hours from Phoenix, through tall pines and spectacular views of the Mogollon Rim; or 3 hours from Flagstaff; or 3.5 hours from Albuquerque, NM.   The neighboring town of Springerville is just 2 miles away, and Springerville airport is two miles to the north as the crow flies, four miles by road. The Arizona-New Mexico border is approximately 18 miles to the east.   The town of Greer is 15 miles to the west, and Alpine is 28 miles to the southeast.

Leisure

The White Mountain AZ area offers premier recreational activities: hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, boating, birding, horseback riding (annual Eagar/Springerville rodeo), mountain biking and more in the spring, summer and fall.   Winter months feature ice fishing, sledding, downhill skiing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.   River Run Golf Course, about 2 miles from this home, is “one of the few courses in Arizona that exists next to a natural flowing stream, the Little Colorado River. Its 18 holes, par 71, 6400 yards, include special attractions such as petroglyphs along the course and the original mill site of the grist mill used by the founders of the community.”   National and other parks in close proximity include: Wenima Wildlife Area, with 357 acres (about 3 mi. northeast of town); Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area, with 1362 acres (a few miles south of Springerville); and Lyman Lake State Park (boating, fishing, trails, ruins and petroglyphs).   An integral part of this community is Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, a 2-million-acre home to more than 410 species of wildlife and one of the largest ponderosa pine stands in the world.   Arizona's largest ski resort, Sunrise, with 65 trails, is about 20 miles west.   Nationally recognized archaeological site, Casa Malpais, is located within the Springerville town limits.   Other regional attractions include: the Petrified Forest National Park, Painted Desert, Navajo Nation, Big Lake Recreation Area, Rattlesnake and Ravensite Ruins and petroglyphs.

Description/Summary

Crafted by a custom builder in 1995 from superior logs imported from northern Colorado, this 5,179 square-foot home boasts a hand-oiled log exterior whose interior walls, in an artful combination of exposed log and rich amber pine planking, complement pine-planked floors and ceilings and give the house an exceptionally warm and comfortable feeling.   The kitchen, living room and master bathroom enjoy an elegant upgrade by a talented Seattle-based interior designer.   The roof, installed in 2004, features Elk Premium Roofing (30-year Prestique II) and upgraded insulation.   Two separate driveways - one leading to the garage, and a circular approach to the home's entrance - showcase a warm-hued concrete matte-and-aggregate surface design.

The home, constructed on three levels, has a south-facing front entrance with a comfortable, covered deck area.   The entryway has a guest closet and a guest half-bath.   A vaulted, open-beamed ceiling rises above the spacious living room, or great room, where an outsize chandelier hangs from an overhead beam, accentuating the living space below.   North-facing clerestory windows and sliding glass doors that open onto a wraparound deck bring the outside in with dramatic views of the sweeping valley beyond.   Under a generous wood-hewn and corbelled mantelpiece, warm colors of earth-hued South African slate finish the façade and seating ledge of the extensive great-room fireplace, creating a sense of serenity.

Off the great room is the large master bedroom suite (600 sq. ft.), favored with landscape views on three sides.   Its windows, and that of the master bath, are installed with top-down/bottom-up Hunter Douglas Duette shades.   The master bath has new décor in a muted pallet - an eye-pleasing counterpoint to its south-facing exposed log wall - two separate sink areas with drawers and cabinets, and a walk-in closet.

The living room, dining area and kitchen overlook the valley and fields to the north and west, and Flat Top Mountain to the east.   The dining area, with chandelier and wall lighting, features new, thermally insulated landscape windows with views into the valley and hills to the north, rugged juniper and pinyon pine to the west.   The roomy kitchen, faced in warm pine, has been beautifully updated with new floor tiling that accents gorgeous terrazzo worktop surfaces.   The Dacor Preference gas cook top (with automatic raised vent) and breakfast bar opposite are located on a central cooking island.   Appliances: built-in oven and microwave, dishwasher, disposal and refrigerator.   Other features include extensive drawer and cupboard storage, broom closet and a voluminous 2-door built-in pantry.   For convenient outdoor entertaining, a west-facing door opens onto a covered deck area.

An open stairway with wood railings takes you from the home's entryway to the third-floor hallway that overlooks the great room from solid pine railing.   The third floor enjoys lofty peaked cross-beamed ceilings and pine-planked flooring.   North- and south-facing walls feature large dormer windows with wide-scale views.   The large east bedroom has closet space and an adjoining bath whose second door opens out onto the hallway.   Window treatments incorporate Hunter Douglas Duette shades.   The flexibility of the open, light-filled west bedroom space allows for transformation into a playroom, library, office or studio/study.   It features all-new thermally insulated windows.   Separating the east and west rooms, and level with the clerestory windows, a cozy alcove/den area overlooks the great room and offers breathtaking valley views.

The spacious daylight/walkout downstairs area (approx. 600 sq. ft.) could function as a family room, entertainment (has built-in wet bar) or recreation center, or as office space.   Newly carpeted in a neutral shade, this area has north-facing sliding glass doors that open out onto a covered area and backyard and command wide views of the valley beyond.   Off the west end is a sizable bedroom with closet and a separate bath.   A large, all-purpose storeroom and an under-stair area that provides out-of-sight storage offer liberal storage space.   The substantial laundry/utility room with broom closet, long wall shelf and large utility sink can accommodate much more than a washer and dryer alone.   From the central area, a door to the east leads into the large 2-car garage (shelving on the south wall).   This space easily accommodates a workshop area.   At the north side, a separate workroom or storeroom/gardening-equipment room is provided.   The heating tank, located in the garage, is new.   And the new (2006) septic system is outside, out of view, and adjacent to the garage.
